100% Beeswax, NEVER any paraffin! It is not without reason that our candles have been called the finest beeswax candles available. We have earned this reputation by assiduous attention to the quality and integrity of our wax products. Astonishingly, bees produce wax directly from their own bodies and use it to seal each cell of the honeycombs in the hive. This wax seal is commonly referred to as "cappings" and, characteristic of hives in the Midwest, is lemon-yellow to gold in color. Mt. Sinai's beekeepers employ an old-style process to remove the honey from the honeycomb, allowing for the retention of the original fragrance and color of the wax. Additionally, Mt. Sinai uses only the finest-quality braided cotton wicking for its candles.

As long
as our candles are kept from direct contact with blowing air, they will burn
evenly, slowly, cleanly, and completely, without leaving residue. Pure beeswax,
like olive oil, wine, wheat, and other natural and pure substances, is as
an important element in the worship of the Orthodox Church; respecting this
tradition, Mt. Sinai is scrupulous about quality. Many other candle makers
blend their beeswax with paraffin to reduce production costs.
Conversely, paraffin is produced from the "dewaxing" of lubricating-oil fractions of petroleum. In making candles petroleum must be purified by means of a solvent based de-oiling operation. The petroleum is treated with sulfuric acid followed by clay filtration and deodorizing for the removal of impurities. Petroleum paraffin, which most commercial candles are made from, also constitutes the making of ethane, propane and butane. The presence of some impurities in paraffin may give rise to skin irritations and in rare cases to eczema (chronic skin inflammation). Paraffin candles produce a black soot that gradually coats paintings, furnishings and walls. Sometimes it is visible on the candle itself. They also tend to drip excessively, often leaving a mess as they burn. |
